I've lived in Grand County for more than 30 years, and I'm raising my son here. Moving here is a big change, and the questions people ask me are rarely about square footage. They're about winter, roads, schools, groceries and which town will feel like home.
The towns, in one paragraph each
- Granby is the year-round crossroads where US-40 and US-34 meet, with the East Grand schools, shops and services, and more house for the money.
- Winter Park is the resort town, about 1.5 hours from Denver, with higher prices and more visitors.
- Fraser is five to ten minutes from the resort, with a hometown feel and Fraser Valley Elementary in town.
- Grand Lake is on the water at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, quieter in winter.
- Tabernash is space and quiet between Fraser and Granby, with very few shops.
- Hot Sulphur Springs is the county seat on the Colorado River, and one of the most affordable towns.
- Kremmling is the ranch town at the west end, with its own West Grand schools and the county's lowest prices.
What newcomers ask about
- Schools. The East Grand School District covers most of the county, with schools in Fraser and Granby. The West Grand School District is in Kremmling.
- Getting to Denver. Over Berthoud Pass, about 1.5 hours from Winter Park and 2 hours from Granby. In summer, Trail Ridge Road also links Grand Lake to Estes Park.
- Winter. Fraser is called the Icebox of the Nation for a reason. Plan for heat, snow removal and a vehicle that handles it.
